Банзай учився на п'ятому курсі біофаку. Як одного з найкращих студентів його скерували на практику в один коледж, відгалуження від універу, на викладання біології у старших класах. Відверто кажучи, доти, доки Банзаю не сказали, як називається те місто, він навіть не підозрював про його існування. Мідні Буки.
Дуже далеко розташоване, їхати дві з половиною години, та ще й потягом, який зупиняється біля кожного стовпа, наче пес спаніель.

People always asked him if he was the Yurko Banzai. "No," Yurko Banzai would say with a smile, and, anticipating the next question, add: "We're not even related."
Banzai was a senior studying biology. He was one of the top students, and so was sent as an intern to a boarding school associated with the university to teach biology. Until he was told the name of the town, he had no idea that such a place even existed. Midni Buky, "copper beech trees," was its name.
The town was far away, two and a half hours by a train that stopped like a spaniel at every doorpost.

Цікавіше, як перекладач справився далі, там, де Дереш переходить на сленг?
ReplyDeleteОт не знаю - самому цікаво. Цей фрагмент, на жаль, усе, що часопис "Fiction" запропонував у електронному варіанті. Далі - треба купувати паперову версію журналу. :-) Спробую запитати в самого перекладача, як він справився зі сленгом.
